 Holistic programs of study

All too often, private tutors deliver classes on an ad-hoc basis with little to no planning involved. Our tutoring program adopts a long-term approach. Our ten-lesson guides for each literature text and our 8 lesson creative & transactional writing workshops aims toward providing some vision and  structure.

We try and strike a balance between student autonomy and structural discipline. Our tutors provide  model answers ranging from G6- 9 to ensure that students have a grasp of exactly what is required in to excel in the final GCSE exams.

A holistic approach to teaching English literature

Each of the texts and anthologies above come in ten-lesson packages. For each of those texts, your tutor will cover the themes and politico-historical background as well as the key quotes and techniques. We prefer to use logographs and symbols instead of actual quotes as we have found that this moves students away from memorisation of quotes to actually understanding them. Toward the end of the ten-lesson package, your tutor will move toward exam preparation by going through practice questions, model answers as well as guiding you on structuring your essays.

Our approach therefore covers the three pillars of literature at GCSE level
AO1 (Overall understanding)

AO2 (Themes and literary devices/techniques)

AO3 ( Political, social and historical context)

     The key issues

Navigating the two English Language papers can often seem like walking through a maze.

Whether it is AQA, Edexcel or EDUCAS, both Language papers continue to be  one of the lowest performing exams for the majority of secondary schools throughout the country. There are several reasons for this.

Section A of both papers present students with unseen texts.  Unlike in literature, this means that students are unable to rely on prior in-class analysis and memory. They are tested purely on their independent micro and macro analysis of texts.

Section B provides students with the challenge of producing their own creative body of work, be it descriptive writing in Paper 1 or transactional writing in Paper 2. All too often, teachers struggle to teach the complexities of extended writing in structured manner. This is especially the case when it comes to creative writing where teachers often simply provide an image and leave students to their own devices.

Our solutions include...

01

8-Lesson Creative Writing Workshop

We take a holistic and structured approach to teaching creative writing. Each of our 8 lessons have specific aims and success criteria.

We start by banning the use of colour. Why? Quite simply because banning colour forces students to enhance their use of other descriptors. The opening two lessons focus on characterization and clothing, lessons three and four include the use of narrative thought and character movement, whilst lessons five to six focus on creating different types of setting. The last two lessons tie it all together with an opportunity for formative marking.

02

8-Lesson Transactional Writing Guide

English Language Paper 2 Section B can often be extremely daunting for students. Technique-heavy teaching frames like DAFOREST do little to help them structure their work

We start by quite simply dividing transactional writing into two themes: pathos and logos. Why? Well, quite simply because emotion and logic are the two levers that manipulate readers to appreciate our viewpoint.

Once students have grasped the fundamentals of this twin concept, we then move on to a three-part structure guide called DIA (Description, Information and Argumentation).

KS3 ENGLISH

Key Stage 3 English tuition
War poetry is a great way to teach students key literary techniques at KS3 level.

Ofsted once referred to Key Stage 3 as the 'Wasted Years' of student progression. Among the reasons highlighted were a lack of challenge in the classroom and the lack of engagement   with home learning.

We aim to tackle these issues by providing highly structured lessons which test each of the key assessment objectives required for their GCSE exams.

LITERATURE AT KS3

Our tutors use a selection of 10 highly engaging fiction extracts to help students familiarize themselves with the macro and micro analysis required to succeed at KS4.

With regard to creative and persuasive writing, our tutors use interactive lessons with easy to remember scaffolds to ensure that students remained disciplined in their writing.

CREATIVE WRITING AT KS3

Our ten lesson creative writing guide for KS3 has been used in both school classrooms as well as online tuition. The guide breaks down creative writing into different categories such as characterization, setting, dialogue and clothing and props, ensuring that students are learning a new skill every lesson..

 Why people believe in us

Prospero provided us with a great teacher and tutor who is good at building rapport with children and teaching them insightful exam techniques. The tutor was great at developing creative and critical writing and giving detailed feedback on how to improve analytical reading and writing skills.

Habab, Manchester

Prospero supported and provided excellent tutorship to my son ahead of his A-levels. Professional and reliable, it is clear why he is so sought after.

Sak, London

5 stars. My tutor helped me think outside the box in creative writing and helped me find useful evidence to back my points in texts.

Nidushaan, Essex

Prospero Education has been teaching my son, who is in year 10, for the last couple of months. The tutor has been helping him improve his answers and build a better narrative description. My son finds the lessons interesting and helpful. I particularly appreciate the de-brief texted me after the lessons.

Lina, London
